What is Percent?

A percent is a special ratio or fraction that always has denominator equal to one hundred.

For example,

$\frac{1}{100},$

$\frac{10}{100},$

$\frac{50}{100},$

are all percents, called one percent, ten percent, and fifty percent, respectively.

Any fraction can be represented as a percent by solving the equation:

$\frac{x}{y} = \frac{z}{100}.$

For example, if $$\frac{x}{y}$$ is one-half, then

$x = 1,$

and

$y = 2.$

We need to solve the equation:

$\frac{1}{2} = \frac{z}{100}.$

This gives

$z = 100 \times \frac{100}{2} = 50.$

So one-half is equal to fifty percent.

For another example, if the fraction is three-quarters, then

$x = 3,$

$y = 4,$

so that

$z = 100 \times \frac{3}{4} = \frac{300}{4} = 75.$

Therefore three-quarters is seventy-five percent.
