The product of two linear factors

$(x - \alpha)(x - \beta)$

is a polynomial of degree two:

$(x - \alpha)(x - \beta) = x^{2} - (\alpha + \beta)x + \alpha\beta.$

Definition:

Polynomials of degree two are also called quadratic polynomials.
