The product of two linear factors

\[ (x - \alpha)(x - \beta)\]

is a polynomial of degree two:

\[(x - \alpha)(x - \beta) = x^{2} - (\alpha + \beta)x + \alpha\beta.\]

Polynomials of degree two are also called quadratic polynomials.
